196 EXT. FRONT YARD, BLUNKS' - NIGHT 196

There's two police cars in the driveway. Mrs Fishman, in the
garage, is illuminated by the harsh police spotlight. She's
pulling up her dress and pulling down her panties to show a
handsome POLICE INSPECTOR her bb wound. A 2ND COP comes out
of the house with Adam's BB gun.

2ND COP
Could I see the wound?

197 EXT. FRONT YARD, BLUNKS' - NIGHT 197

Hal pulls into the driveway behind the police cars and sees
Mrs Fishman baring her ass to The Inspector, the 2nd Cop and
TWO DEPUTIES -- who are taking turns getting close
inspections. It's a pretty weird thing to come home to. Mrs
Fishman quickly covers herself and glares at Hal.

The Two Deputies walk toward Hal menacingly.

DEPUTY 1
Are you Harold Blunk?

HAL
Yeah, what's this all about?

DEPUTY 1
We'll ask the questions, sir.

HAL
Ok.

DEPUTY 2
Have you seen your son in the past
hour?

Hal sees Mrs Fishman standing beside the attentive Inspector.

198 INT. KITCHEN/DINING ROOM, DUVALIERS' - NIGHT 198

Joe Duvalier Jude's father, drains his beer and smiles at
the roomful of Happy Young Grub-Balls. Richie playfully
drags Leslie, Jude's mother, to an open patch of floor and
leads her into a Virginia reel.

LESLIE
Oh gawd, Richie. Ah caint' do this.

Richie clowns and spins. They all laugh.

FEMALE SINGER
I'm goin' where those chilly winds,
those chilly winds don't blow I'm
goin' where those chilly winds don't
blow I'm goin' where those chilly
winds, those chilly winds don't
blow. There's pain in my heart that
cain't nobody know. A pain that
cain't nobody know.

The FIDDLE SAWS out the tune, BANJO PERCOLATES HYPNOTICALLY.

Will, who's halfway into his beer, stands beside a pile of
marijuana sitting on a wooden tray. Ward is smoking a joint.
Joe walks over and grabs a beer out of the fridge. He notices
that Ward is smoking.

JOE
Oh, hey. Could ah' get a hit off that?

Ward hands Joe the joint and Will watches him take a hit. Joe
eyes Will through his thick glasses. There is no invitation
in his gaze; just idle curiosity and a hint of suspicion. Joe
hands the joint back to Ward, but Ward points to Will. Joe
tentatively hands the smoldering joint to Will, who takes it.

WILL
These guys are great.

JOE
Oh. Ah' can't belieeve' we got'em
awl' here at the same tahm'. Gawd ah'
wish ah' could just put em' up here,
permanently.

Will hands the joint back to Ward. Joe takes the joint from
Ward, takes one more drag, gives the joint back and leaves.

JOE
(continuing)
Awrighty.

Kathy, Jude and Carrie come in from outside. Kathy beams at
Ward and holds up an infant car seat.

KATHY
Look what Carrie gave me!

Then she sees Will.

KATHY
(continuing)
What are you doing here. I thought
you were grounded.

WILL
I am.

KATHY
You came down here anyway?

WILL
I ran away.

KATHY
Oh God. Why?

Kathy fills an empty mason jar with tap water.
WILL
Because I'm tired of Dad's shit. Did
you know that he's been screwing Mrs
Fishman?

KATHY
What?

JUDE
No!

WILL
Yeah.

JUDE WARD
No! Awright Hal!

KATHY
Really?

WILL
Yeah.

KATHY CARRIE
No way. Oh man.

WILL
You don't believe me?

KATHY
How would you know?

WILL
Believe me, I know. I was under her
bed when it happened.

KATHY CARRIE
What? Aaggghhhh!

WILL
Well, I snuck into her room because
she took my dope away from me. But
then she came home and I had to hide
under her bed. Anyway, she comes in
and .. well, she called Dad and he...

Will had started this story with a sort of gruesome relish,
but halfway through, it's starting to hurt on the way out. So
he makes it short.
WILL
(continuing)
...you know, they started humpin'.

KATHY CARRIE
Oh my God. You're kidding. Oh no!

WILL JUDE
I wish. Outa fuckin' hand. You were
under the bed.

WILL
And then, last night, when they
called from the hospital, Dad was
down there again.

Will's eyes are brimming now.

KATHY
Wait a minute. You were under the bed?

Will locks his jaw and his tear ducts and nods yes.

WARD
Oh man. That's harsh.

Carrie gives Will a motherly hug.

CARRIE
Oh, you poor kid. God, you must be
traumatized.

WILL
I need a beer.

199 EXT. FRONT YARD, BLUNKS' - NIGHT 199

Hal BLOWS REVEILLE(on a bugle)and listens for Will's response.

HAL
God Damn It!

200 INT. KITCHEN/DINING ROOM, DUVALIERS' - NIGHT 200

Will chugs a beer and swallows hard. Kathy, Jude, Carrie,
Ward, Jordan and Will are sitting and standing around what's
left of the food table. Jude has his legs wrapped around
Kathy and she's clutching her mason jar of water.
KATHY
I would be really surprised if this
was the first time Dad cheated on her.

WILL
Really?
KATHY
Oh, yeah. God, she sure cheated on
him.

WILL
What?

Will's obviously bought into a more positive family history.

KATHY
Oh yeah. Remember that guy, who used
to come over ...that big Jewish guy.
I think he was a psychiatrist.

WILL
Dr Gomberg? *

KATHY
No, before him.

WILL
I can't remember.

KATHY
Well, I remember everything.

WILL
Really?

KATHY
Oh, yeah. Mom almost left with that
guy. He's the reason they got
separated the first time.

WILL
Really?

KATHY
Yes!

There is a subtle divisiveness in Kathy's tone. She is still
grouping Will and her parents apart from herself. She's using
these nasty disclosures to push Will away and mark out her
territory here among the new clan.

KATHY
(continuing)
You don't remember that?

WILL
No. Actually, I thought everything
was pretty good up until a couple
years ago.

KATHY
Oh, God! I swear, I don't know this
kid. You obviously grew up in a
completely different family than I
did. Jeez.

Kathy LAUGHS. The alcohol and pot has loosened Will's
inhibitions, but that is starting to work against him now as
he starts to get emotional.

WILL
No.

KATHY
What?

WILL
It wasn't always that bad.

KATHY
Like when was it good?

WILL
I don't know.

KATHY
Ugh. I don't remember anything good
about it at all.

Will goes way out on an emotional limb here.

WILL
Well, you and I had fun sometimes,
didn't we?

Kathy, who is deeply invested in her version, CLICKS HER
TONGUE, impatiently.

KATHY
Oh God, I DON'T KNOW. It's all a blur
to me.

Will's emotional limb snaps.

CARRIE
Jesus Kathy.

KATHY
He sounds like his father.

Will looks from Ward to Carrie to Jude.

WILL
It's gettin' hot in here.

Will walks

INTO

201 INT. FOYER, DUVALIERS' - NIGHT 201

Will has been peirced by his sister's remarks. He's trying to
get out of the house before his emotions get the best of him.

202 EXT. FRONT YARD, DUVALIERS' - NIGHT 202

Will bounds down the steps and races his tears across the
overgrown yard to his bike. He climbs on and rides

INTO

203 EXT. COUNTRY HIGHWAY - NIGHT 203

Will scarcely gets out of the driveway before Lucy's car,
driving the opposite direction, passes him, screeches to a
stop and then peels out in reverse to catch him. As Will
coasts to a stop, his tears turn to self-righteous anger.
When Hal pulls up next to him and rolls down the window, Will
is staring over the handlebars ready to give back whatever is
coming.

HAL
Where the hell are you?!

WILL
I'm right here Dad.

HAL
Look at me! Where are you?!

Will slowly turns and looks at his father. He's bolstered by
the beer he's been drinking.

WILL
I'm right here Dad.

HAL
No! YOU, to begin with, were
GROUNDED. And beyond that... Will!
What the...

Will has turned away from his father again. Hal bolts out of
the car and comes lurching toward him.

HAL
(continuing)
Now, you look at me when I'm talking
to you!

He grabs Will and shakes him by the arm and jabs his finger
at him for emphasis.

HAL
(continuing)
You are in big trouble buster! Do
you know that I had to go down to the
police station? Do you know that Mrs
Fishman's got a bb in her ass?

WILL
Good. I hope she dies.

Hal shakes him violently.

HAL
I am this far away from beating the
shit out of you. Do you know that?
Now what the hell were you doing in
there?

Will yanks his arm away and backs up.

WILL
I can do what ever I want!

There is something in Will's eyes that sends Hal over the
edge. He grabs Will and spins him around and spanks him on
the ass as hard as he can, emphasizing the words with blows.

HAL
You are NOT...going to the DUV-
aliers! Do you hear me?!

Hal shoves Will back around and away. Will gets all tangled
up in his bike and FALLS DOWN.

HAL
(continuing)
Oh God, I didn't mean to do that.
Shit. I'm sorry.

Hal tries to help Will up but Will lashes out at him and gets
himself up.

WILL
Get away from me! You're a liar, a
cheater and a jerk! And I hate you!

Will shoves off and starts riding past his father and
hollering over his shoulder.

WILL
(continuing)
I'm glad you're going away. I don't
want to live with you anyway.

HAL
I didn't... Will.

WILL
Why don't you go marry Mrs Fishman?
You make a great couple.

As Will rides away, Hal stands there, beside himself. He
looks at the Duvaliers' white house and their unkempt lawn
and his hatred of life finds a focus. He jumps back in his
car.

Will, riding toward home, hears his father's SQUEALING TIRES
and turns around. He sees Hal slam his car door and stalk
into the Duvaliers' house.

Will stops his bike and watches -- truly scared for the
first time. Will starts riding back to the Duvaliers', not
quite sure what he's doing. He leaves his bike under the
apple tree and runs

INTO

204 INT. FOYER, DUVALIERS' - NIGHT 204

The MUSIC HAS STOPPED. The Two Grungy Girls, who look like
they're fleeing a police raid, pass Will on their way out the
door.
